Nikon zet nog meer in op digitaal
Getuige een persbericht dat Nikon vandaag heeft uitgegeven, verschuift het bedrijf zijn aandacht nog meer dan voorheen naar ontwikkeling van digitale produkten. Als gevolg daarvan beperkt Nikon de fabricage van manual focus-objectieven (voorzover nog iemand die kocht) tot een selecte groep van groothoek- en macro-objectieven. Het stopt de productie van objectieven voor vlakfilmcamera's en vergroters. Ook wordt het aanbod in 35mm SLR-camera's beperkt tot de professionele F6 en de FM10, een beginnersmodel dat vooral in Afrika, Zuid-Amerika en minder welvarende Aziatische landen wordt verkocht.
Ongetwijfeld zullen er binnen enkele dagen weer slechtlezende en kwaadwillende "journalisten" een stukje opkrassen waarin ze stellen dat er bijna geen objectieven meer worden gemaakt voor 35mm camera's. Dat is, zeg ik ze nu alvast, onzin. Alle autofocus-objectieven voor 35mm blijven in productie (dus niet alleen DX-objectieven!). De beperking geldt alleen de manual focus objectieven.

Following the success of our digital line-up over the last seven years, which has resulted in more than 95% of Nikon’s UK business being within the digital area, Nikon Corporation has made the decision to focus management resources on digital cameras in place of film cameras. This decision will allow Nikon to continue to develop products that match the demands of an increasingly competitive market place.
Despite this growing competition Nikon Corporation has continued to outperform the market, and has recently reported positive financial results which saw group net profit climb by 20%. Sales of high end digital SLR cameras and the success of products like the D70s and D50 have helped contribute to these positive figures.
As the film camera market shrinks and the popularity of compact digital cameras increases, demand for products that offer advanced features and extra value is continuing to grow. High performance digital SLR cameras are performing well as users shift from film-based SLR cameras or upgrade from compact digital cameras to digital SLR cameras.
As a result of the new strategy Nikon will discontinue production of all lenses for large format cameras and enlarging lenses with sales of these products ceasing as soon as they run out of stock.
In recognition of Nikon’s commitment to professional photographers we will continue to manufacture and sell the F6, our flagship film model, as well as a number of manual interchangeable lenses. Sales of the manual FM10 will also continue outside Europe.
UPDATE donderdag 00.47: De eerste slechte lezer is al gesignaleerd. Hij trekt precies de door mij voorspelde verkeerde conclusies. Je zou toch van iemand die zogenaamde "pro-tests" voor een fotoblad doet, verwachten dat hij zich bij de feiten houdt. Maar dat is blijkbaar moeilijk, met een rode Canon-pet diep over je ogen getrokken.
UPDATE donderdag 10.12: Ook de New York Times gaat de fout in: "Nikon said it would halt production of all but two of its seven film cameras and would also stop making most lenses for those cameras." Daar klopt dus niets van. De F55, F65, F80 en F100 zijn autofocus-camera's en ALLE autofocus-objectieven blijven in productie. Zelfs in het geval van de FM3a gaat hun tekst niet op, aangezien die camera zowel AF als MF-objectieven kan gebruiken.
UPDATE donderdag 17.45: Van de grootste kranten tot de kleinste weblog, ze gaan bij massa's de fout in. Bijvoorbeeld in een artikel op Planet staan zoveel fouten dat corrigeren een onbegonnen taak is. Treurig dat zoveel mensen die zich journalist noemen blijkbaar nooit een voldoende voor het onderdeel begrijpend lezen hebben gehaald. Lutsers zijn het, die niet lezen wat er staat, maar wat ze erin willen lezen.
